| Level 2 College Student | What's all this I hear with these BSOds and crashes after POST? Am I going to have to change my RAM to 5-5-5 somehow? How do I do that, and wouldnt doing that make it worse ram? So shouldnt I just buy ram that is already 5-5-5-? Like one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227030 [edit] Every single 2 x 1gb ram at DDR2 800 on newegg has reviews that say "DOESNT WORK WITH..." What DDR2 800 Dual Channel has the JEDEC standard of 1.8V? [edit#2] This one: OCZ S.O.E 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227120 is 200 after MIR, and has a default of 5-5-5-12. It is 2.0V, so would I have to change that to 1.8 in the BIOS for it to work properly? ![]() ![]() Last edited by Zambini; November 1st, 2006 at 16:53. |

| On initial bootup, the i965 will try and run DDR2-800 memory at 1.8V (at 5-5-5 or 6-6-6). Your memory module must (#1) be able to do this and (#2) be SPD programmed to report that it can do this. Unless - Your board has a BIOS that gets around the issue by whatever magic the BIOS gods work. Otherwise you'll get no POST. Once your board has booted for the first time, you can set the memory voltage to 2.1v (or whatever voltage your memory module calls for) and restart the computer. If you don't do this your computer will be unstable. Once your computer has restarted with vMem @ 2.1v (or whatever), you can set your memory to 4-5-4 or whatever it is rated at. The inital boot is a problem (really just a limitation) with the i965 chipset. So in order to work correctly out of the box you need up to date SPD programming on the memory modules, and an up to date BIOS on the motherboard. | Level 2 College Student | how do I get up to date SPD programming on the ram and how do I update the bios. (yes, I'm ****) for this: GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128012 Is it just somewhere in the Gigabyte.com database? Here is Gigabyte's page for this board. They have a .pdf that lists compatable memories, and this is one of em. CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory - Retail U guys think I should just play it safe and get a 1gb now and another gb later if I need it? Or keep with the OCZ, or get this ram: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail which is 300 - $40 MIR, making it the same price as the OCZ, but i read some of the reviews and it seems to work well with Core 2 Duos with little or no modification; Setup consists of ASUS P5B-E, Core 2 6700, EVGA 7800 GT, 2GB Corsair mem. I threw away the packaging and therefore lost the $50 mail-in rebate! Runs great! Using it on a E6600 with ASUS P5B My Asus P5B Deluxe did not automatically set the memory correctly from the SPD. I had to manually set it to 4-4-4-12. No voltage bump was required. Using with E6600 OC'd to 400MHZ FSB(3.6GHz) and Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard. I've been keeping my new rig on 24/7 to look for any stability issues. None so far. So it looks like this is the RAM for me unless you guys have reason for me to not get it. | I'm Diggin it! | Looks good to me. Just keep in mind the memory timings thing and you'll be fine. All these things we are throwing at you must sound confusing, but once you put it all together, you'll see what we're talking about and be just happy with it. | Level 2 College Student | I'm going to fry's after school today (in 5th period atm) and I'm gonna look for the ram they have on that .pdf, or if they dont have that I'll look for CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail that ram^ cuz I figure if I can chop off 150 bucks i can get more other stuff. plus 1gb of ram at that speed should be more than enough on a dual core bamf rig. ![]() ![]() |
