You can pull some light-modest overclocking out of a stock heatsink/fan combination, but you'll get better results, temps, and possibly lower noise out of a third party HSF. Depending on the specific one, pricing ranges from roughly $20 to up around $60+.

There are several worthy candidates to choose from, with one of the balanced values belonging to the ZEROtherm Nirvana. It performed exceptionally well in our review, and I'm currently using it on my toasty QX6800.

Another favorite (albeit pricey) is the Thermaltake V1. A more affordable and ultra quiet solution belongs to the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.

And there are several more, which I'm sure others will sound off on their favorites.

Yes it will, but you just have to make sure that the motherboard supports Core 2 Duo.

The stock intel heatsink isn't the best for over clocking. Maybe a minor over clock...
I'd suggest the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (aka TRUE), this is one of the leading aftermarket CPU coolers, but at a cheap price!

Edit:
darnit Paul! You beat me to it...

wow, I must be out of it today... Blake beat me too.....

Cheap price? The Ultra Extreme is definitely one of the best coolers available, but it certainly is not cheap, especially considering you still have to buy a fan for it. It might be cheap compared to what you crazy watercooling guys are used to spending!

You can squeeze some extra MHz out of the processor on the stock heatsink, but I usually recommend these to people on a budget: Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - Retail

I own the AMD version, and they're killer little heatsinks for the price. Of course everyone has their own recommendations, so the best bet is to browse around and find the ones in your price range to compare with the plenty of reviews floating around.

Welcome to HL! I have the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro on my rig, thanks to Stormcrow here.My idle temps are 26 - 28 C. I dont think it's gone over 30C even when gaming. The fan installs rather easy if you follow the directions with the way the arrows are supposed to point (cough) men dont need directions (cough) It is very quiet as well.Good luck with your rig.

I got my dads E6550 to 3.0 on stock cooling, it did need a voltage bump from 1.275 to 1.3v.., max temps is like 51c. He is running it on a Gigabyte P35-DS3R. This weekend I'm pushing it further....

Ok I changed some things heres a new list:

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3P LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Dynamic Energy Saver Ultra Durable II Intel Motherboard - Retail

MSI NX8800GT 512M OC GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

OCZ StealthXStream OCZ500SXS ATX12V / EPS12V 500W Power Supply - Retail

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - Retail

And I was thinking about this case:

Sunbeam Transformer IC-TR-BA Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail

Noise really isnt an issue since my computer now is pretty loud. My only question is would my mobo fit in there correctly and would my PSU support all the fans.

With all of this that takes me to around $550 I still need to throw in some ram and may either upgrade the processor or get a new hard drive now instead of waiting awhile. (I have a SATA HD but its not as large as I would like). that 550 is unshipped to so shipping alone might take it up to 600.

Edit:

Forgot the processor lol

This was recommended to me:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe 2.33GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6550 - Retail

But I cant decide if its worth the little extra to just get the

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6750 - Retail

With those added in now it takes me more within the max of my budget range lol no wonder I thought something was a bit wrong with 600$ lol.

Last edit these final touches take me up to my 800$ mark

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

OCZ S.O.E 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Desktop Memory Model OCZ2SOE6671G - Retail

x2 memory sticks for now
