It's just Dos commands that tell your network card to release (stop using) the current IP address it has been assigned, and renew command tells it to request to be assigned a new IP address from the DHCP server (more then likely your router).

Screwball....Ok, did that, it said "the requested operation requires elevation"

Ok, tried again: I entered ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew" then received an error "inrecognized or incomplete command line with a long amount of detail under USAGE under it. Not sure what to do now.

Open up a dos command prompt and type ipconfig/all. and then post a screen shot if you can. If you are unable to do a screen shot just tell us what IP address it shows.

ipconfig *SPACE* /release

Negitive ghostrider, no space. It actually works both ways.

Not what we need buddy, physical address is your mac address. We need to know what IP your network card is using.

for a screen shot, bring the command prompt in focus (click on it) then hit Alt and Print Screen at the same time, then open up MS paint, and paste the image (Ctrl and V at the same time) save the image in paint as a JPG, then copy that image to a usb thumb drive and remove the thumb drive. Then put the thumb drive in your laptop and upload the image to a post here at HL.

another idea is to "repair" the network connection icon in the bottom right corner... this should refresh your IP address

I don't think this is going to help him, it doesn't sound like he is getting an IP address at all, and I have a feeling that the card isn't even installed. We first have to find out why he isn't getting an IP.

OK SR, two more screen shots I need. One of the device manage with the network devices expanded, and one of Network connections (right click network places, click properties, and take a screen shot).

Are you absolutely sure you've installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard? If you didn't, then that would explain why the Ethernet port is not responding. Go into the device manager and make sure there are no problems with any of the devices or controllers (like a yellow exclamation mark on them or something).
