Yeah, I should have been more specific. The SpeedStep link says the following:
Quote:
Chipset: A motherboard with one of the following chipsets is currently required to support Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology: Intel® 910, Intel® 915x/925X/XE or Intel® 945x/946x/955X/975, Intel® 965/963 Chipsets.
The chipset in this laptop is probably an 845x...

But that doesn't rule out the use of the proc, just not the use of speedstep. I do agree with just selling the laptop and use that to invest in a decent desktop system. A decent buget system is very possible with 500 + the sale of the laptop.

Well, the laptop is 3 years old, has been having numerous problems (CPU not included other than a very hot laptop), etc. The CPU has much life, but yeah, I think a E4300 system should be the way to go.

BTW, does 945x support C2D. NewEgg has boards saying it does, but I recall Intel saying you need a 965 or higher.

Hey guys, take a look at this page to see what chipsets support C2D. The one Blake linked to has the 915P and I know that chipset doesn't support C2D because the Bios cannot go to the low voltage settings needed for C2D processors. Some 945 Chipsets support C2D if the voltage can be lowered enough through a Bios update. Some 945 mobo's have to be a certain revision level, like Rev 2.0, for it to support C2D.

Wtcnbrwndo4u, you would need to visit the Dell website, or let me know what your specific model # computer is and I can look it up, to see if your Dell's mobo will support the C2D processor. Or give us a screenie of CPUz under the Mainboard tab. That may let us know if it can or not.

I do have Rev 1.0 mobo and I'm dead positive Dell wouldn't include a voltage regulator in the BIOS. I looked on the Dell forum anyways... It would require a mobo upgrade to the next gen system. I'd rather build a system of my own.
