As for the version I remote desktop into work about once a week which limits it to Pro at the cheapest. I'm running XP Pro currently. Also I'd pick up Windows Backup and Shadow Copy with Pro or Ultimate.

I really do appreciate the thoughts, as somebody suggested before I'm going to try and get the better CPU now.
Regarding RDP
TonyChan.Org Blogs - Remote Desktop on your Windows Vista Home Premium

Works just as well as Ultimate.

Hey,

I would not even go with Vista. It sucks thoroughly. If you already have XP Pro, reuse it and wait for the next version of Windows which is allegedly coming sometime in 2010. Allegedly. I wouldn't worry too much about MS not supporting XP; They don't do a good job of it now anyway, and the headaches you'll save by NOT going to Vista are huge.

If you are going to have people pick stuff up for you, create a wishlist at Newegg and share it with all your personal Santas. You might also want to go here and snag some sweet deals before they disappear. I can't remember where, but I saw 1TB drives for $100.

Whoa....before you put down Vista....please explain why?

Others here, as well as myself, have been running it for quite some time and have had no problems whatsoever.

My low opinioin of Vista comes partly from my lack of working knowledge and partly my acceptance of the opinions of others I know who hate it. I offered to help my neighbor set up sharing of a printer, something I could do in 10 minutes with XP. I still have not been able to figure it out in Vista, but will sit down and do the research one of these days just to keep my word. I also had similar challenges helping my father get his network up and running under a combination of Vista and XP. I'm no fan of Macs, but Vista just reeks of a poorly-done copy. If and when I'm forced to go to Vista, I may learn it better and change my opinion, but as of today, I don't like it and can't recommend it.

But that's just me. Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. Not valid in CA, but then again, they're a little flaky anyway. All actors 18, especially the ones who don't look it. No animals were harmed in the making of this movie, but one scooted his butt across my carpet, and was given a harsh speaking to..... ;^)

Not knowing what fans specifically ship with that particular case, it's hard to say how loud those fans really are compared to the ones that you picked out. You may be suprised with the fans that come in the Centurion; chassis manufacturers have come a long way from using cheap, rinky-dink fans to quality units that are both quiet and push a good amount of air. An example of this would the fans used in the Antec 900 and 1200 enclosures.

I don't see why you would need to upgrade to Ultimate just to have remote desktop. XP Pro does a terrific job of that already. And really, Windows Backup and Shadow Copy? You could buy third party software solutions (like Acronis or even Norton Ghost for that matter) that are much more robust and effective than the hashed-together-at-the-last-minute software that Windows includes with Ultimate to try to justify the exorbiant price point.

Regardless, when it comes to down to me choosing between a more powerful system (hello DDR3) versus spending $180 on a bloated OS such as Ultimate and being relegated to DDR2 tech, I think you know which one I'd choose.
