only 23 connections have wires going to it. is this normal on a PSU?
Yes, the requirement for the -5 Volt rail was dropped from the PSU design guide. Revisions 1.2 and 1.3 eliminated it. On a 24 pin connector it would be pin #20 and was formerly a White colored wire. Thus, yepper it is normal to see that lonely position.

Heat shrink really helps to make it look snazzy. Use all those random holes and stuff in the case to hide cables. You can also run some behind the mobo. Zip ties are your best friend too.

There is no set right way, each case and PSU requires a bit different efforts. Just take your time. Do not finalize anything until you are happy with the layout. The above tips are solid also consider cable extensions in some cases to give you enough free cable to route it out of the way.

If you are happy with it then it is the right way..

Want me to take a picture of the wiring in my Dell? It's really clean!

That's only because the cosmetic plastics have clips and stuff to hold cables down. But they've done a good job to improve airflow.

thank you, this place is cool lol. erm main uses is mainly every day stuff link mp3 encoding usage of music software, im a gamer at heart i love my games the main problem i had with the p4 was that it would over heat quite easily in some cases till it switched off in disgust

so a new comp is in order, ive done my homework and i know quite a bit but i am kinda a ****ie still. the comp i designed in my pm is basically the fruit of hours of research however it would cost £800 to build :( i wonder if there was a cheaper solution without skimping much on performance?

You could drop that E6600 down to like a E6300 and overclock it. You don't need "SLI-Ready" RAM. That's a marketing gimmick. Any OCZ RAM will do. Lastly, that SLI board is unnecessary. If you must have it, you don't need to get one by Asus. An ECS SLI board will do just fine.

EDIT: I think you should up the PSU though. OCZ StealthXStream or GameXStreams are good.

very interesting, thanx again and finally should i opt for a desktop or decide to go lanbox by thermaltake as the size would merit a more movable comp and since id still have the p4 it would be my little play thing lol. although i have no clue about good micro atx boards as i researched atx mainly.
