but some do use creative's x-fi chip.
I'd say their main competitor is onboard audio.

Anyway, anyone know where i can find these X-Fi Vista drivers? all i can find are the Audigy ones

also looks like DailyTech got ahold of the story as well (with a link to a torrent of the drivers)

From reading that article, it sounds like the drivers he wrote were focused on the crippled audigy cards... not the x-fi cards. Which makes sense, since the main reason they seem to be crippled was to push sales of newer cards... so there is no reason to cripple the cards they're trying to push (the x-fi's).

On that same note... my x-fi drivers work just as good as they did in xp.... Don't have any audigy cards to try it with though.

You can pick up a razer barracuda for 55 dollars shipped today on woot.com... I hit it up. Don't know if it'll replace the xfi in my good computer yet.... kinda all depends on if one of the cards works better in linux than the other, or if I get the itch to have xp again.

Creative backpedaled today and somewhat softened their stance with an edited post:

However, we did not make it as clear as we would have liked that we do support driver development by independent third parties. The huge task of developing driver updates to accommodate the many changes in the Vista operating system and the extensive testing required, including the lengthy Vista certification requirements for audio, makes it very difficult for Creative to develop updates for all past products. Outside developers have been very helpful to Creative and our customers by developing updates for many of our Sound Blaster products, and we do support and appreciate these efforts. This however does not extend to the unauthorized distribution of other companies' property. We hope to work out a mutually agreeable method for working with Daniel_k in supporting his efforts in driver development. Going forward, we are committed to doing a better job of working more closely with third parties to support their development for our products and our customers.

day 1: YOU SUCK WE ARE GOING TO SUE YOU IF YOU DO NOT STOP FU**ING WITH OUR S**T

day 2: wow look at all the people saying they hate us now... kind of funny

day 3: hmmmm maybe we used too strong of wording to Daniel_k.... nahhhh

day 4: ewwww our stock is falling, sales are down over the past few days with the online retailers... but our forum usage is up so this means more people are visiting us and will start buying what we tell them to again soon

day 5: OH S**T... we are f**ked if we don't release some official word saying the same thing but in hypocritical terms... something that says "we only work with people and companies that we want to" but without admitting fault with daniel_k

Thanks HL and Corsair!
