| Modder-ator | That is actually not true. The PR (Performance Rating) on AMD chips are really meant to distinguish performance differences between AMD chips only. While there might appear to be a correlation between the Athlon 64 PR and the speed of similarly performing Pentium 4 chips, the two are not related from a marketing standpoint. An Athlon 64 3200 might perform near what a Pentium 4 3.2GHz chip would, but it is only in certain benchmarks (like gaming), not usually across the board (like video/audio encoding/decoding) where pure clock speed is more advantageous than an efficient architecture. |

the performance rating was originally created during the athlon xp days. the PR rating was used in correlation to the T-Bird athlon. so an athlon xp 2500 was approximately a 2.5ghz athlon t-bird. it just so happened to match up pretty well with a 2.53ghz P4. another deciding factor in the PR is the amount of cache. AMD usually adds 200 "mhz" to the PR for every time the cache is doubled. hence why a 2.2ghz A64 w/ 512k of L2 is a 3500 and a 2.2ghz A64 w/ 1mb of L2 is a 3700. and just when you thought that was confusing enough, amd decided that HTT would also play a part in PR ratings. thats why you see a 2.2ghz A64 w/512k L2 but with an HTT of 1600 marketed as a 3400. utter madness LOL Last edited by simple_inhibition; April 26th, 2007 at 12:30. | |
