My god how did this forum allow you to go AMD? No one even tried to stop you from wasting your money... I thought HL was hardcore?

I have a Athlon64 3000+ and AthlonXP 3000+ and 2600+ and 2200+ that all work great. but so does the Intel E6600 and P4 1.8GHz in my possession as well.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members.

If AMD is what the budget allows for, it's still a computer, and no slacker as far as that goes. Not as good as going with an Intel set up of course, but the reality is simple. For a budget gaming computer, he did alright.

Q6600@ 3.2GHz w/ CNPS9700 | EVGA 780i | 2Gb Corsair DDR2-800 | EVGA GTX 280 1Gb Video | 1x WD 640Gb HDD, 2x Seagate 400Gb HDD, 1x250Gb WD | 2x Samsung SH-203B Opticals | Antec 900 | ABS/Tagan BZ700 700W PSU

Couple of things:

1) We're not 'hardcore,' at least not in the sense that we'll overlook bang/buck recommendations in favor of a larger e-penis. Our focus at HardwareLogic centers around helping the new/upcoming enthusiast, the first time builder, and anyone else that may feel overwhelmed at one of the many 'hardcore' forums out there. In that sense, our opinions and recommendations tend to be more functional and less exciting, for lack of a better description.

2) Having said that, given the chance, 99% of the time we're recommending an Intel foundation. They've got the better option at just about every price point.

At the same time, we won't flame anyone that wants to stick with AMD for whatever reason, particularly at the low cost end of the spectrum. The errata bug is troublesome, but at the end of the day, a solid AMD based system can get the job done in terms of real-world performance, it just won't benchmark as high.

1) I meant hardcore as in knowledge wise, which this forum is stock full of super smart hardware people.
2) True
3) I wasn't flaming, I was asking an honest question. I personally run an AMD 2500+ Barton, so I am far from a fanboy. I just don't think AMD is worth spending money at this time. You might as well just throw your money down a hole and forget it.

The K8 architecture still gives full blown Conroes a good run for their money, it's not like comparing a Conroe to a Pentium 4. A X2 6000+ based rig is still a damned good one, the downsides to it is the Windsor is hotter and has much less overclocking headroom then a typical Conroe. A Core 2 doesn't completely shell an X2, what makes them the media darling is their overclocking potential. The X2's and even X4 K10's have awesome price to performance thanks to AMD's price war, usually just coming in right under by a few points of the Core 2 line at a much cheaper price point.

What about when you start discussing the E8400?

Wolfdale is about 15-20% faster then Phenom at the same clock speeds, so I would assume the same is true for the K8's since they match K10 clock for clock at times. The E8400 is definitely the processor to look for, but thats if your budget can allow it. You can get a X2 6400+ and a decent socket AM2 board for much less then a E8400 and a board that supports it like a P35 (unless you want a really crap P35 board)
