| Modder-ator | You're making broad assumptions here. Just because it is an Acer laptop doesn't mean it is going to have terrible battery life and overheat, it will depend entirely on the hardware inside of it! |

| I might get flamed for saying so, but so be it. I recommend that you buy a MacBook Pro. It'll run any operating system under the sun, and their hardware is a lot more sturdy than the vast majority of the competition. |

| the MBP's seem pretty nice. we've had a couple of them in the shop, and most of the problems are people no knowing how to click a mouse, (i'm not kidding it was this lady straight from russia, spent 3 grand on her first computer and doesn't know how to click, i'll tell that story some other time) but the only problem is replacing parts in them is expensive as heck. i.e. a DVD drive for one costs about $200 to get replaced. most other laptops cost about $80 |

| overpriced maybe at around $2700 (Canadian Funds) i had a dell -core duo 2.0ghz (T2500) -2GB DDR2-667 ram (2x1GB) -17" Widescreen WUXGA+ UltraBright TrueLife (1920x1200 the nicest lappy screen almost ANY screen ive ever seen) -100GB SATA 7200RPM hard drive -7900GS GO similarily priced u get one like that with a Core 2 Duo now easy - maybe even cheaper. this thing played F.E.A.R., NFS Carbon, COD2, everything man it ate all of that stuff for breakfast. of course not everything on high, and not enuff battery power by a long shot to run a game more than maybe an hour (dont forget when unplugged it works on one core only for longer life). DVDs on the other hand it did well at around 4-6 hours depending size, and other things like brightness setting on the screen and what not. bottom line is get a 7900GS GO as the card, 2GB of RAM, and ur game section is covered (with power chord for sure). as for the DVD viewing, if ur not 100% clad on the 17" screen, 15.4" screens have better battery life and nice performance for viewing, and some come with respectable enough video cards - not to mention some have them are cheap considering. dell has really nice laptops, but dont rule out gateway, asus, and acer like mentioned. make sure u choose the best one possible, and definitely dont expect to meet ur expectations of endless battery life paired with seemless performance -- it doesn't exist! not to mention this is for school. get a mini kicker - MacBook 13" -- they're amazing man and like already mention u can install many diff OSs. particularily removing OS X and installing XP/Vista ;) also, the hardware statement is correct. and along with apple WOW the Apple Care you get tops anything - u'll be safe if something actually does go wrong. u just need to decide whether or not its worth the price of the extra for a small little thing like this > http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/875/mblq1.png parts are good in that lappy. it all comes down to personal taste. keep us posted though this is a nice thread. |
