what is your dad using the system for? if its nothing more demanding than internet, music and movies, then drop to an E2140 or E2160. he wont notice the difference between it and the E4500 in those aplications.

I like the specs outlined by Cap, with the case being from Fry's website (cheaper).

I think XP would run nicely on this machine, it would sure feel faster, but if you like the look and feel of Vista go for it.

Lol I was just gonna mention that azianai.

Honestly, for the OS, it all depends on what your dad is doing.

Right off the bat, since I know that he isn't using anything too graphic-oriented, I would say go for Vista. It's more user-friendly, and downright sexy. Problem is for hardcore gamers or graphic-oriented users, it's not there yet.

P.S. I go for the E2xxx series. I have one and it's AMAZING running at 3GHz - that's a E6750 - for under $90 including tax. I'm NOT complaining. The lack of cache is NOT bothering me one bit either.

We might laugh and joke....but the $10-20 between a good product and a great product might be a deal breaker.

Theres nothing wrong with Corsair Value Memory, I've actually used it several times without issue. As to the E2140/60, either of those would be perfect.

You might even consider him trying Ubuntu....he can browse the web, do email, use Open Office for the business, etc.

Yep, that would be another big money saver in terms of Ubuntu.

And, to be honest, between E2140/60 is up to you - but I honestly don't think it's worth it or necessary to jump up to an E4500, and especially not an E6xxx series chip.

Yeah, I wasn't really clear....but.

The difference in memory may only be $5-10, the processor $30-40.....but all of that adds up, and jumping up a level here means jumping up a level somewhere else....and pretty soon you are over budget.

Also, with this build, steer clear of Vista, go for Ubuntu, or XP.

I know my parents don't really like Ubuntu (I had it on our family computer for a while) because they don't know it... if your dad has the patience to learn it, it's probably the best choice.

I'd say Ubuntu is no harder to learn than Vista.....and its a lot cheaper and less system intensive.
