double click and install? Then install the Realtek Audio driver. Or just get Vista and you won't have this problem

is this on a fresh windows xp install? its odd that none of the suggested solutions have worked for you and makes me wonder if your install is corrupted.

And that the SP3 version I'm seeing is SP3 RC1 (Build 3264). In other terms, maybe a clean version of Windows XP would work... ;P | |

I've recently had exactly the same problem with my ASUS Maximus Formula Special Edition board with the same Xfi HD Audio Card. It took me two days of trudging through tech forums to find the solution so hope this works for you as well to save you the time. Theburan is right that you need to instal the Microsoft KB88811 patch for the High Def audio bus to work. This was included on the final version of service pack 3 and so if your Windows version had the final version then it should work. However if it was on early Service Packs then you just need to install the patch and then the drivers and software should install and work from there. This is where it got more complectaed for me and judging from your screen print of your version of Windows I think this is the same problem for you. The version of Windows that I have had one of the early versions of SP3 streamlined into it and these earlier versions did not have the patch included. Subsequently when you try to install the patch it detects that you have SP3 installed already and so won't let you update. The only way round this is to edit the registry to fool your system into thinking you have SP2, restart and install the patch and drivers (all included on the Driver CD) and then change the registry entry back to SP3. I had never really altered any registry entrys directly using regedit before but found this fix really easy and has given me confidence to do more in future. I found the walk through on the following site; Windows XP SP3 RC v3264 Does NOT Support High Definition Audio - Dashken's I-Blog So hope this works for you as it did for me and you will have beutifull HD sounds coming at you soon.

thing is also, if he's using the onboard, its not the X-Fi that comes with the maximus. The onboard audio for the P5Q Deluxe is normal Realtek one. Could also a VERY silly thing if you don't feel like registry hacking or anything, uninstall SP3, install the HD audio codec, reinstall the audio driver, Reinstall SP3. Or just upgrade to Vista =D
