No, it's the AIK (Automated Installation Kit) for Vista that allows remote installs of updates like SP1 for Vista (or Server 2008) accross company networks.

Example: Where I work we have about 200 machines accross the network (some networks have thousands of machines). The AIK allows the IS people to easily deploy the update accross the entire network. That way each user doesn't have to go find it and download it. Additionally machines on the network that do not have an internet connection can also get the update.

I just checked and from all the info I saw, the ONLY available releases for Vista SP1 (and XP SP3) right now is beta. Some are coming through Windows Updates but that is typically only if you have beta software enabled. If it came from TechNet, that should be just a link to enable the beta version through Windows Update, much liek how the XP SP3 is for RC2.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

screwball, take a look at this link. Also everywhere else is saying it. Its "final" version thats released to manufacturers, and some people have gotten it in windows updates for OEM usage (mostly those using the OEM bios hack for Vista)

right and that information states specifically:

Quote:
...getting RTM'ed does not mean Windows Vista SP1 will be released to public. Release to manufacturing (RTM) means exactly that - Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is final and is now released for manufacturing, and to the OEMs for integration with their systems.
  • In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1. Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so.
  • In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience.
  • The remaining languages will RTM in April.
The End-User Manual Update was originally scheduled for a February 19 release but has since been rescheduled to take place on or after March 18, 2008. This RTW (Release To Web) update is based on Wave 0, which means it only comes with support for five languages - English, German, Japanese, French and Spanish.
So the RTM means that you got a beta version (unless you got a connection directly into an OEM or manufacturer that integrates SP1 into the OEM builds and discs), then you would actually be in illegal possession of a final SP1. The ONLY people getting final versions right now are manufacturers like Dell, HP, and so on and only to add into their systems that will go on sale starting around mid March.
Receiving SP1 through any other method means you got a beta version as that is the only download available for any one at this time.

Looks like the early Windows Update 64-bit Vista SP1 was a mistake on MS's part...
