The DI-624 is listed as xbox live compatible, I have the latest firmware for my revision, but my hardware revision is C, the latest is E i believe. It could be possible they were referring to later revisions as live compatible. I fired an e-mail to dlink to see what they have to say about it.

@oc, I don't believe I have a max port option, but I will check.

I have always had good luck with SMC routers but I was also looking at that DLink gaming router mentioned above...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

i just picked up a dlink extreme n router on boxing day with a pc card to go with it. after reading many router reviews it seems to be the best rated one.

in my short time with it, i've noticed that the setup homepage or whatever you want to call it is very, very complex. not in a confusing way, but in a much better way. as someone stated already, you can do just about anything with it.

just my 0.02 for ya. but i have a feeling that it will be too expensive for you to consider it.

I have heard great things about that router too, what I don't like about it is the price. Coming it around the $200 mark makes it a hard choice for most people. The DLG-4300 can be picked up for around $100 and is more then enough router for most people. 802.11n Technology isn't mature enough yet, and most wireless devices these days are still 802.11g so it makes it hard to justify spending an extra $100 on a technology you can't fully take advantage of yet.

Yeah, no port option.

No, I will not be going N anytime soon. I never liked wireless for a main desktop rig, just never seemed to have quite the same speed as wired, plus we have two laptops that are G only, so N would just be way to expensive to get going.

I will be looking into the 4300, depends how much my parents are willing to spend.

Whatever happened to hacking the antenna?

I thought the old PC Magazine tech network on cable did a great job on installing range busting antennas. Unfortunately, the network was bought out by G4 I think. You can check the websites of the router manufacturers who sometimes carry better antennas to attach to your router. You can easily send a half-mile if you use the right antenna or antenna combination. If memory serves, they were using coffee cans to get the job done. You might check some war-driving site, if you need more range.

Plus don't think everything has to be G or MIMO, 802.11a actually punches through walls better than 802.11g ever did. Pre-n is interesting, but just in principle I don't like going with a device that doesn't yet have a real spec. Personally, I like ethernet wires, you aren't hackable.

If you're connected to the internet you're hackable, but I think your talking about someone getting onto your wireless network. In which case if you're just running a wired network someone can't wardrive you. Just for fun sometime take a wireless enabled laptop into any neighborhood or apartment complex and scan for wireless networks. Then look to see how many have unsecured wireless, and I bet most of those still use the router default password. It's a hackers heaven out there. In my neighborhood, just sitting in my computer room I pickup 9 wireless networks, 3 of those are unsecured.

Well my a friend of my mother's gave us what looks like a brand new WRT54G for free. It being weird though, I can go on xbox live and the other PCs still have internet, but as soon as I try to access my music shares on my PC from the xbox, every looses internet until I reset the router. I haven't checked the router config yet, but this isn't looking to good....

Just so, I amend my statement to: You aren't as hackable.

Wireless connectivity is an "iffy" thing. Wires work great, especially if you can fish them through the walls and keep them from being underfoot. There are flat ethernet cables which you can run along the walls under carpet. Wires work where wireless sometimes fails.

I should have included this link in my previous post. See below for better antennas and a range expander.

Linksys.com – Products/Wireless/Basic Networking/Range Expanders & Antennas

From what you're describing, Lead, I am unable to diagnose except to say have you checked to be sure your file and printer sharing is enabled? You may wish to specify the file properties include sharing.

Your problem is weird and I doubt my solution. Maybe the router configuration/ router BIOS update could prove to be your solution.

Well with my old D-Link router, the xbox could access my shares on other PCs, but as soon as you tried to access live, the router with crash and reset. On this one, as soon as you try to access shares, the internet dies, but live seems fine.

The linksys site does not even list the router. I have only found upto WRT54G v2, yet somehow I have v5
