Why does upload fluctuate so much? Some times it's in the 100s and other times 2-300kbs etc.? Or,are there too many variables involved to come to a specific conclusion? It strikes my curiosity that there would be such dramatic differences in every application.

Probably your Internet Provider. They give you up and down speeds but they always say up to this much that way their not guaranteeing anything.

Aha! Now I understand. I was under the assumption that it had to do with file size/packet size ....it all leads back to the ISP, and probably type of connection as well,dial-up vs. cable vs.satellite.

I posted a few pages back about a difference even with your own computers at home. I ran a test on a XP3000+ and my C2D E6600 and there was a big difference in speeds... I will see if I can find that post

edit: found it

E6600 system:

XP3000+ system:

Now the thing that bugs me is the ping, much higher ping on my C2D box but also a much higher speed.
both computers hooked up to same connection, same router, same cable modem, etc... the wifes P4 1.8GHz gets a touch lower than the XP3000+ does

Thanks HL and Corsair!
