Each computer needs it's own IP address, and your ISP only provides one. You either have to use Internet Connection Sharing like explained above, or use a router. I am not sure if a Cable/DSL router with work for satellite internet.
like taking say, 3 cables plug them into separate computers and join them all in the middle? If that's the case like I've already said you need a switch for 3 or more PC's.

So where's the problem with just plugging a router straight into the modem? Seems like the easiest thing to manage. Don't need a computer open at all times, and wired routers go for pretty cheap.

Nothing, that's why I suggested it.

Question Re: Need Help Building Home Network

Gizmo, do you still have to download with the Satelite and upload with a dial-up modem? I know the technology has changed since I was last talking to people about it. If you do need to use the modem to upload then it is going to get a little complicated. You should be able to use the ICS, but I have never tired that in a config like you are talking about.

As they said above, you would then need to connect the 2nd computer to the first computer. If it is still using the dial-up method, then you need to have the 1st computer doing all the work for the 2nd.

Now if they let you dial up with both computers and share the dish, now you have a totally different situation. Provide some more details about the config or at least the provider info and I think we can be more specific.

Our advice isn't good enough for you?

You have 2 choices, internet connection sharing or a router. Actually 3 you can call your ISP and pay for another IP address then just connect a switch.

I didn't say your advice isn't good enough I apologize if I offended anyone I was going to call and find out which router would be best to use with satellite internet but I think I figured it out last night after going to the hughesnet support site and finding a support question for people looking to build a home network and for anyone who also has satellite internet i suggest doing the same if you have any problems here is the weblink Home Networking with the DW6000/DW7000/HN7000S

and again I apologize for offending anyone on here If I did so the information you have given me has helped me in making my decision and a router is the best way I know of now Thanks for all the advice and will look forward to more help in the future from this forum who's members are very knowledgeable in an array of subject matters.
Thanks Again
Matt
