Understood. Yeah. I actually just tried SmartFTP and I am beginning to like it. What I always found annoying with older and less advanced FTP programs is that you couldn't delete a folder unless you deleted all the other files and folders within it. For folders that had several levels of files and folders deep, that was a pain in the rear.... SmartFTP took care of that in a hurry. What I liked about the old IE FTP in the browser window was the ease of use when I just wanted to quickly upload and download a few files, AND I could do it on any computer, at work or anywhere, without installing a new program or add-on. Like if I noticed I wanted a quick change in a .css file on my site then I could just open IE type in "ftp://ftp.mysite.com" then login quickly, copy and paste the file to my current desktop (home/work/friend's house) then make a change to the file real quick, the copy and paste it back in the original ftp folder. It would be that simple. And, I could leave the window open for a long time and the files/folders were listed in the IE window as if it were just another folder on the current computer I was working on... While I really like the features of SmartFTP (and I can do without that firefox add-on), I just liked the previous ease-of-use that IE previously offered. Additionally, it was nice being able to do that from any PC with an internet connection. I guess that is really what I miss, being able to do it from any windows computer with ease and not having to install anything. I was hoping there was just a quick change in the IE settings that I could look for. I tried looking for it a couple times, to no avail... I was hoping maybe somehow I overlooked it and someone tell me a quick fix... But oh well, I have went quite a while now without it, so I guess it's time to move on :) Last edited by PrOLifIC_onE; January 19th, 2007 at 01:24.

| Functional Alcoholic | Have you thought about running an FTP Client off of a USB thumb drive? |

Speaking about the browsers, there's not a big difference in terms of raw benchmark performance, but IE (both 6 and 7) are worlds apart from Firefox with regards to customization. Firefox is a tweaker's dream, and with over 2000 extensions available, it makes for a highly personalized browsing experience. For example, surfing without AdBlock Plus (coupled with the Filterset.G Updater) seems archaic to me these days, and I'm totally sold on Mouse Gestures. Tab Catalog is nifty, Fasterfox gives browsing a little boost, and on the entertainment side of things, Smiley Xtra is great for frequent forum usage, and I'm addicted to my Daily Dilbert. But that's only the tip of the iceberg; there's a wealth of functionality available, both productive and fun, and another person could have a completely different set of extensions and be just as content. My advice would be to give Firefox a week or so of dedicated usage, and to browse around the extensions (also poke around this Firefox Extensions thread for some of our member's picks). It took me about that long to really appreciate the subtleties over IE, at which point it becomes like carrying a cell phone for the first time - you wonder how you went so long without it. /end hijack I now return you all to the regularly scheduled discussion of FTP solutions...

| Super Moderator | The functionality was removed form IE for security reasons IIRC. FTP is generally not supersecure as it is, IE's method actually saved user and password info into the browser history. Thus, someone could come along and just write it down. You won't find me pulling punches for MS. However, they are not the only ones guilty of the faux pas (I should really look at the FF extension). Its just that folks harped so much about thier security they had to tighten everyplace they could. It was my understanding (however untested) that you could reverse the change and re-enable upload. If you have done that and it doesn't seem to work, it could simply be a compatibility issue. The IE FTP method allowed for very little configuration and would not hook to all sites (like my own for example). If you are on a single user machine, the added security risk is minimal - no matter which browser you are using. That said, personally I like CoreFTP lite - a client. I've seen some rumblings that folk like this functionality enough so it may return in a more secure form. I'm suprised its not in IE7 in fact. The form that gets passed to the FTP server is unique and could be easily stripped away and disposed of. As long as its secure as a normal FTP client, I don't see what the issue is. Then again - I'm not a security expert. Manta |

| Functional Alcoholic | I am forced to use IE at work, and I do mean forced. I installed FF on my work PC, and used it for about 2 weeks. Until one morning I came in and found that it was gone, and the FF website blocked. |
