Yes

I can see the computer being on the network but not from another computer. It's like they cannot make the connection.

The computer name has to be different for both.

When you log into both those two computers, do you use a name and password?

Sorry I just assumed you knew a little bit about networking. All computer names have to be different. But the work group needs to be the same. You have to have an account on all the computers that's the same name with the same password. That's how they authenticate. You don't have to be logged in with the same account, it just has to be there.

So we have 3 names one has to be different the rest need to be the same.

Hit the windows key + Pause/Break
Click "Computer Name" tab
click Change and use Workgroup (not domain), make sure all computers are the same... I put something custom in there, for example your forum name here, and make sure all computer have the same thing. Using MSHome or Workgroup in there poses a potential security problem so thats why it is better to have a custom name.
Also on the Computer Name tab area, click NetworkID and follow through the wizard there.

One thing I noticed is that sometimes when you have 4 computers like that, multiple systems try to be the "network master". There is a single registry key that can disable them on all but one desktop, preferably XP Pro desktop (not laptop) that is always connected, and not via wireless. Let me see if I can find it

Thanks HL and Corsair!

If you run the home networking wizard it sets that automatically. Which ever computer you run it on first becomes the master. If you don't run it on all of them then you will have conflicts.

there has been times I run it on 4 computers on a wired LAN and 2 or 3 of them try to be the master and I get error messages in the event viewer saying as much... "computer XP3000 is trying to be master but computer XP2600 is already master... starting vote for master.." then "computer XP2600 is trying to be master but computer XP3000 is already master... starting vote for master.."

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Default Re: Home networking

found it....

Start -> run... -> type regedit, and scroll to this key change value to False
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browser\Parameters IsDomainMaster=FALSE

Change this on all computers but the main desktop hooked to the network with a wired connection. Once this is done on all of them restart all of the computers including the main system and once they restart it will see the new master is the main desktop. Go to other shared folders on your network from the main desktop and you should have access to the other computers... once this is done it should take care of it..

this is what fixed it for me
