Yeah, it's definitely a final release now. When I downloaded it after I first saw this thread, it was still in RC3.

Yeah... same here. That was really weird. I sure hope Fedora Core 6 includes Firefox 2. They were released the same day, so I sure hope it does LOL

I really like Firefox 2, but I had to delete my application data folder to get it working correctly. The extensions I was using before screwed FF up when I installed the new version.

Man... you never realize how many ads the internet has until they come back! LOL

I followed all the instructions but for some reason my Ubuntu still only sees it as 1.5.0.7... strange....

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Strange for sure. Not sure what to tell you about that. Does it have the different interface with the close X buttons on every tab and the spell checker function?

aha I just did some digging and turns out that Ubuntu has 2 different locations for firefox. One is a hidden folder on the desktop or close to the top of the tree.
I dug some and found FF in the usr/share/firefox directory... so I switched to root (to do it the GUI way since I have no clue about the terminal command) and copied the unzipped firefox folder to the /usr/share folder... worked fine in root but when I switched back to my login it would open but nothing worked properly. No bookmarks, prompt windows empty...
So a little further digging turns out that the hidden file/folder has the symbolic link to the real FF executable... all I did was go to the Blue Orb thing and went to its properties and changed it to /user/share/firefox/firefox and now it works perfectly. It still has my old bookmarks and saved passwords and whatnot. Although no plugins... thats the next step.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

This is because your copy of FF2 has been installed to a different directory than your 1.5.0.7 installation. I can't speak for Ubuntu, but by default, Fedora keeps FF in /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.7 or /usr/lib64/firefox-1.5.0.7 for either the 32bit or 64bit version, respectively.

Check to see if /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.7 exists. If so, extract FF2 to your desktop, open terminal, and run this:

Code:
# Become root
su -

<enter>

# Copy the files
cp /home/USERNAME/Desktop/firefox /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.7

A few of my favorite extensions only support 2.0 now. I can't seem to install any of them on my lappy without having to upgrade. Oh well, not like I was not going to upgrade anyways :flame:
