Actually, phone lines using the coax cables is popping up more and more out here in SouthDakota, it's pretty nifty, we have pretty much what is a 2nd cable modem in our house (a nice arris model, too), that hooks right up to the house's internal phone line, with the coax going outside. Alot better than the old system, to be sure... but then again, I don't live in the really rural part of South Dakota (with that being everything with the exception of sioux falls, pretty much, lol), so it's probably not that good everywhere.

Probably helps having a military base 1 mile away... there's plenty of fibre lines and what not running through the area already.
