Ya know, looking back over this.....lets isolate the components, then work on overclocking.

Drop the memory voltage to stock, and the memory clock speed to DDR2-800 or below....we'll find the best CPU overclock, write everything down, then lower the CPU clock speed and raise the memory clock to find the best memory overclock.......after doiong those two things, we'll tie the two in together.....its the best way of doing this.

INTEL E8400 // Gigabyte EP45 Extreme // 4GB DDR3-1600 // Palit HD 4870 // Antec 1200 // Seagate 750GB HDD // Zalman CNPS9700 // BFG ES 800W PSU

Doing this should I run Super Pi and the small FFT -stress CPU test, and large FFT - stress some RAM test respectively? Or am I just looking to see if the PC will load into Windows?

when OCing the CPU, I use the small FFT test. It works fine for me. But when OCing both the RAM and CPU, run the Blend test.

Agreed. I like running the small FFT test to single out the processor and I use Memtest for testing the memory. then I'll use other tests like SuperPI, 3DMark, PCMark, etc to test for total system stability once I have stettled into an overclock that appears to be Orthos small FFT and Memtest stable.

Ah, yes, MemTest. BTW, what's the difference between MemTest and MemTest86+?

AAHHH, I forgot about the two versions, I was just generalizing, sorry

MemTest is actually a Windows based version that tests the memory for errors and stability while Memtest86+ runs on its own outside of Windows. I prefer Memtest86+ to MemTest, but both should get the job done.

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

Blake, that's the wrong Memtest (I never even knew a Windows version existed).

Developer Samuel Demeulemeester released Memtest86+ as an update to the original Memtest86 (written by Chris Brady), since the original hadn't been worked on for several years. That's recently changed, with both Memtest86 and 86+ receiving updated code as of this past January (and Samuel has contributed to the latest version of Memtest). Both diagnostics do essentially the same thing, and you'd be fine to user either one.

I had been using Memtest86+, up until the original was updated, and have since switched back.

Thanks for clearing that up, Paul. I've been wondering about the MemTest86/Memtest86+ thing for quite awhile..............

AAHH, I figured Memtest86+ was an update to the original Memtest86, but didn't know that the original Memtest86 has been resurrected! Thanks for the heads up Paul :wavey:
