I currently have 4 systems that are moderately to moderately-high over-clocked. Looking at it from this perspective, I have no problem shortening the lifespan of my components; by the time these components fail, it will more than likely be time to upgrade them. In any event, my systems run my applications faster (generally) and I have the satisfaction of knowing my systems just a little bit better. Which will allow me to make better purchasing decisions in the future.

Extreme over-clocking isn't something I am willing to get into just yet. For me
that is for those who wouldn't bat an eye at frying a $500 sub-system within the first week of owning it, just to get another to tweak even more. I'll leave that to the more affluent among us.

I'm just glad that I can keep my CPU temps significantly under normal body temperature (31-33°c) on idle, and just a couple degrees over that on full load.

If it's not fixed, then don't broke it!

Which is a good way to look at things....but far too often I seen overexcited beginners, or people who don't research things, or know what they are doing.....crank up the FSB and voltage to an insane level....then complain to everyone who will listen that their brand new $2000 system died on them.

Honestly, I don't see any reason for "Extreme Overclocking"....to me its kind of penis envy for geeks.

I don't really understand why people take an overclock to an extreme. I've seen people at the other forum who were overclocked 100% or more, and they go to cooling extremes like using liquid nitrogen to keep things under control. If you have something like that in mind, why not just spend a little extra for a faster initial FSB, and then go for a modest oc? It would be relatively safer than blowing out your cpu with an insane oc, and you might not be spending additional money to get a new one.

Why do people street race when they can just become legitimate racers?

Probably for the thrill of it.

Although you do make an extremely good point :P

You also make a good point - Touche'

I guess I just look at it from my own viewpoint that I won't go to that extreme if I can't afford to pay the price, as it were.

Like I said....its penis envy.

In a way, it makes me mad.......most of these people end up burning their stuff up, then try to RMA it back through the retailer or manufacturer. This screws the rest of us when those companies change their RMA policies.

there are some people out there that are very good at overclocking, and know what they are doing.....and there are people out there sponsored by companies....given ES and cherry picked components so others will see their incredible results and spend money buying those products )processors, motherboards, RAM). The problem is, those cherry picked parts are the cream of the crop, and when the people get the retail versions, and those versions don't perform nearly as well, they either are really disappointed, or they ruin the parts pumping too much juice through them.

Anyway, I'll be the first person to say that a modest OC is both easy and a great way to save money. Yuo can easily overclock a a budget processor (think E6300) to mainstream or even enthusiast levels.

My rule of thumb is if you can do it at stock voltage and with a stock cooler then you are safe. (Provide of course you are using a reasonable measurement of the temperatures. I do not get these guys that run their cores at 65c and up all the time.)

I found out today that my PC which has been in stock setup for about 10-11 mths now (since new) using the std intel cpu fan control enabled has been running at 58C @ idle, add the huge chore of defragging and it climbed to 61C. I discovered this today when I downloaded & installed speedfan software. So alarm bells rang & I pulled cpu heatsink & cleaned compound off & applied Artic Silver compound. This reduced idle temp to 57C... wow!!! So after looking through bios and finding the hardware monitor in there, the high temps were confirmed to within a couple of degrees. While in there I discovered the cpu fan control & disabled it. I'm much happier to find my CPU @ 44C idling and 46 defragging... so now that temps are in the ballpark, who can help me with a reasonable OC/ tweak for this ol' girl?? Cheers
