Man, I've had my eye on those since they came out. Maybe I ought to sell my E6400 while it's still worth something and jump on the 45nm boat!

Heat probs reported for Intel E8400s

A HEAP of heat problems with Intel’s E8400 microprocessor are being reported on a host of hardware forums.
Users are claiming that the sensor diodes aren’t up to scratch and that’s causing the overclockers to get overheated themselves.
That’s not something Intel is admitting. A response from an Intel techie to a user over at OC Forums claims it has nothing to report on sensor problems but that just seems to be adding fuel to an already crackling blaze.
A search on Saint Google reveals there’s plenty of heated discussion raising people’s temperatures around the world
Heat probs reported for Intel E8400s - The INQUIRER

We touched on sensor or temperature issues in our review of the QX9650. I found it interesting that no one else even mentioned an issue, but everyone jumped on the power consumption and overclocking benefits.......but it seems this issue is also popping up on the dual core Wolfdale processors, with INTEL not really saying anything of substance, other than the parts work within spec....which is 100% correct.

We've brought up the processor temp issue a couple of times, it doesn't benefit part makers in the least to measure temps accurately, in fact all it would do is encourage people to OC, meaning they wouldn't buy the more expensive parts and the number of RMA would increase dramatically.......so if the temp sensors are accurate, but not spot on, it give people pause when pushing their components.

On a side note, looking at some of those threads, you see people telling users to RMA parts that don't OC well, and some basically telling people to ruin the part to make them RMA it.......its stuff like this that raises prices, and makes it more difficult for honest people to get their parts replaced.

I had a E6400 (not 8400) that had a concave IHS that had terrible temps, we are talking 60ºC+ at the lowered 1.8GHz.. had to RMA it back to newegg (and pay a nasty restocking fee) just to get my E6600

Thanks HL and Corsair!

The new pups from Intel though OC like crazy. Nothing "close" to the old process.

Although I'm glad the issue with the core temps came out now before I ordered one, I'm still disappointed since I planned to use an E8400 in my "dream machine", which I'm getting ready to build. Now I'll have to decide whether to go with an el cheapo Allendale temporarily, or forget about the 8400 and go with an E6750 or a Q6600.

Life can be so difficult! :burnout:

just wait for the next stepping or use a temp sensor with a display and OC the crap out of it :)
