That's very strange. How are you setting up the service?

as it states in the normal SMP config... "do you want to run this as a service? [yes/no] yes"
then it says something about failed to initate service.... I can't do it now because that system is waiting on the Gigabyte RMA

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Hm. That's not how I've got my service folds running.

Once you do that, right click My Computer > Manage. Services and Applications > Services. Find F@H service, right click > Properties.
Go to Log On tab. In the "This account:" box type in .\USER (replace USER by an administrator account) and enter the password. Press OK, reboot and hopefully this should work for you. =)

I will give it a try when I get the board back... oh and a quicker way to the services: Start -> Run... -> type: services.msc

To stay safer, you would be best running SMP as a service, entering your user credentials so it starts at computer boot no matter if your account is logged in or not.
Really doesn't matter as long as you're the primary user. It doesn't have to log on to the Admin account and can go into a general account or whoever mainly uses the computer.

This is just for the initial boot up. After 30 seconds and the boot is done, you can do the countless other security steps if so inclined...like switch users and just idle at the welcome screen. It's still folding and doing work. The Welcome screen is, however, a major pain for single profile computers when we're forced to have a password to run SMP as a service. In this case, it's no more secure than not having a password.

For secondary computers, where family and kids may be involved, you just set the primary user as the auto log on. This is hopefully not a kid's computer with them as Admin, and auto logging into that account. If the kid uses the computer, give them a password and auto log on. It's still as secure.

I suppose if we run around in our OS as Admin all the time, this would be of some concern on some level. There's still actions you can take to counteract any openness revealed by auto log on. One would be not log into Admin quite simply. Even in single user, admin only accounts, there's steps to take. If there's really items you don't want others to see or interact with...password protect them. There's no way anyone is ever in my house with time alone around my computer. It doesn't happen. And when I walk away for 5 minutes, the computer locks as requested. Reboot it, fine..you're in. There's then several steps I've failed in at keeping people out of my house, out of my room un-attended, and time to tinker with my computer. I'd fix those long before having to put up with putting a password in every time I reboot.

Are you setting up the passwords for the account first then running the Install.bat second? You run that, tell the service the account and password, and then you see "something, something" twice. THEN you can install the SMP client.

Can't remember what something something is, but it's twice. If you don't see it, it's not ready to install.

yes this always fails... but when I did what polobunny mentioned on another computer, it worked perfectly so I know the fix for my computer when it is back up

At any rate, you're still creating a hole in the loop, for no apparent reason. Auto-login simply isn't needed in this situation.

I said the same thing twice before and even included this in the "additional tips on folding" sticky:

Tip 3. making the SMP client run as a service:
while you install the client, say yes to changing the advanced options and when asked to make the client to run as a service choose yes. after the SMP clent is installed, go into the control panel, choose administrative tools, than services. find the F@H service, double click (this will bring up properties) and choose the LOG ON tab. here switch to the second option (this account) and here enter the same data (login name and password) as when you logon to your windows account. now click enable, apply and OK. you will have to reboot for the service to run automatically in the background.

  • One last "OK", and it's done.
Now when you reboot, it does the log on for you and just goes on into your account.
thanks a lot. this worked on my laptop in vista finally! I was sick and tired
of having to key in my password every time I restarted my laptop.
