I had a similar issue with my system that was fixed about the same time I did a BIOS update and a motherboard drivers update... not sure which it was but I have not had this problem since.
I would still suggest checking the USB connectors on the mobo

Turns out, it was my mouse. I plugged in my old optical and it works fine, but the old one keeps cutting off now. Time to upgrade the Logitech mx510 to something new.
