Maybe you should go back to XP.

Right after explorer crashes and restarts, go to the start menu, and in the search/text input bar, type in eventvwr, and check all the logs in Windows Logs, and Applications and Services logs folder using the navigation bar on the left hand side.

EDIT: See if you notice anything involving explorer.exe

Have you tried to have it listed in Details and not thumbs?

WTF!! Don't go back to XP (or any other OS for that matter), until its a last resort.

Have you installed DivX?

When i was beta test vista, the exact same thing happened to me while viewing my music and video folders. i read somewhere that the problem was caused by divx or maybe Xvid, when i uninstalled it the problem never occured again.

sorry but that is wrong IMHO

Vista is WinME2 (Windows Millenium Edition version 2) because it is so buggy and problematic.... XP was never this buggy to my knowledge because it was based on 2000 which is stable... the early complaints with XP was because everyone was used to how 95/98/ME was used.

I still say go back to XP or dual boot XP and Linux (Ubuntu or Fedora Core 7), I myself have all sort of Vista issues as well on my work computer and it hardly has any extra software on it so I know it is an EXTREMELY buggy OS...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

And you are welcome to your opinion. If this is his only problem with vista, I hardly can recommend uninstalling and going back to XP. Not every one like enthusiasts like us can do dual or multi boot. I haven't touched my XP install for a couple of months...only reason I did was to get it updated, just in case

I would say Vista is far from a WinME2. I have no had one problem with Vista yet, that was not caused by a hardware problem (OC to high), which is pretty pretty surprising since I did an upgrade from XP. I'd say Vista right now is about where XP was around early-mid 2002. As much as I like Vista, I still say 2000 was their best OS to date.

Anyways, at the original poster, have you always had this problem, or did it just start happening?

ok an update. before i got home to try the ccleaner that was suggested.. i decided to reinstall vista. so i got home and backed everything up and reinstalled. as of now i haven't had a problem.

i did have xvid and divx and 3ivx and a bunch of other codecs installed. but i have also installed a codec package this time around.. [vista codec package or something like that] last time i individually got the codecs as they were needed. still no problems as of yet.

i have a g15 keyboard. and sometimes it's program would crash. i wonder if that had anything to do with it. probably not because i don't see any relation between software to run the keyboard and explorer crashing while browsing files.

i am going to be making a slipstreamed xp disc for my new computer build that some of you may have read about. and i'll use xp on that computer until vista matures or something new comes out.. heh.

on a side note. i found out my video card fan is pooched. going to be buying either a radeon x1950 pro or a geforce 7600gt if i can't find the radeon, or the prices are significantly different.

also going to pick up my gameXstream 850w today :)
