I got the little app, I'll see what it does, I have nothing to lose at thi point.
No its not a virus. Its just a Windows service that is particularly vulnerable and should be disabled.

I tried the little app but it says I need to be the administrator.
So I guess my next try is to take the HD out and put it in my desktop and collect the data.

The thing ids I don't know how to remove a HD from a laptop, anybody could guide me through? I have a HP pavillion dv9000

You need to stop what you're doing if you have critical data you want to save from that hard drive. Give me a moment and I'll link you to some resources.

Right click the EXE and say "run as administrator". As in click it, don't say it out loud .

OK. Here's what you need to do if you have critical data on that laptop HDD.

First off, some info.

List of HP manuals for your laptop. HP has a nasty habit of changing the web address for these manuals for whatever strange reason. Download the ones you need and burn them to disk. HP also does away with them on occasion.

List of suggested manuals from that page.

Complete servicing manual.

Hard drive manual. Removal and handling.

Memory Modules.

If, for some reason, you cannot download them or cannot burn them to disk, PM me an address and I will burn them to disk and send them to you. I've saved a copy of the above three just in case.

I'm 99% certain that your laptop drive will be a SATA150 drive. When you pull it out, it will probably have a combined power+data single connector. However, don't be alarmed by this. Look on the drive itself and you should have two seperate connectors just like a desktop SATA HDD.

If it uses an IDE connector, and I doubt it does, you will need something like this to make it a USB drive for use on your desktop. I keep two of these at all times. Just the other day, I used it to look at the contents of an old Conner 170Mb HDD I have laying around.

If you have to replace that HDD, you may be lured into buying a 7200RPM drive for faster performance. I did this myself because the performance difference is HUGE from 7200RPM to 5200RPM on down to the 4200RPM drives HP likes to use. Just be aware that going with a higher RPM drive dramatically decreases your battery run time.

Before I attempt that, I'd like to try a boot disk and see if I could get the data like that.
Where could I find a boot disc?
