Some viruses take over any and every .exe file as soon as it is written to the hard drive, some start spreading over the network as soon as it gets an IP address, some take over USB thumb drives as soon as they are inserted..... there are millions of different types of viruses, trojans, malware and worms that can cause all sorts of problems. The best thing to try first is to try to install it from Safe mode but also remember some viruses continue their havoc from safe mode as well.

Another program that may be of help (again, best to scan from safe mode) is called SuperAntiSpyware, it is a great program to get rid of all kinds of junk but it is a resource hog so I always remove it after the system is clean.

If possible, try to see if any program in windows you want comes in a .msi instead of .exe as that may help get the program installed and better chance of scanning.

So after much deliberation, I've decided to buy her 2 new small hard drives and do a clean wipe. She's got so much crap (non-virus/trojan) that its slow as hell.

Which begs the question, what to do with the spare 250GB that'll be left over... >.>

Well I was gonna nuke it several times first.

Plus, I think my mom was over-exaggerating when she described it on the phone. So far all I've seen is an "anti-spyware" app that I didn't put on there.

What I think happened, is some e-tarded foreign exchange student opened IE, went to some certain website of not-to-be-mentioned-in-public content, and got a popup from something that (although we would have caught it in .0005 seconds) looked like a legitimate offer for a PC scan, which turned out to be spyware.

But yea, I'll be thoroughly nuking/scanning/nuking said hard drive before I release it back into the wild.
