Probably caused by a virus as well. It may be that malware has gotten in and has gone to town on your system, back up everything important ASAP and reinstall windows, I don't think you're going to have a stable OS otherwise :(

hmmm. I did a spybot, that still works, nothing found. I COULD try uninstalling my scaner and re installing in hoping it might work. Yeah i'll try that now.

EDIT: everythngs already backed up so nothing to worry about. I dont really mind wiping it now

No. Memtest86+ or nothing, really.
It's a boot disc, freely available at www.memtest.org

ok I restored It and now its just done it again. Its not a virus or any other malware. I went on seagates website, nothing about disk read errors like this. Im going to reinstall XP then try again. This is the 3rd time i'll have reinstalled now.....

I can boot with the XP disk in the drive (odd) not without. Im was hit with delayed write failures in the MFT and win32 stuff i think. then a nasty bsod

error message

KERNEL_DATA_INPUT_ERROR

numbers were;
0X0000007A (0xE1958C14, 0XC000000E, 0XBF8D5670, 0X1C372860)

then it was something about win32k.sys. it rebooted before I got it down on paper

I would check the memory also to be on the safe side. Pull one stick and see what happens. If you get the same thing then pull the other one and see. It could just be as simple as that.JM.02

That wouldnt explain why windows wont boot without its CD in the drive. im stuck, I need to prove the HDD is falty to RMA it.

maybe this will help the prob...

last time I had this prob, before I changed headers I deleated my partition and was in the middle of a reformat and I got the BSOD, although I didnt think I still could get it but i think 23GB is used to hold the system restore on my comp so that wasnt formatted over yet. how and why could this happen!

Is Seagate/Maxtor asking you for anything specific in order to issue an RMA? Have you tried going through the online process? I just RMA'd a faulty drive to Western Digital about two agos, and all I need to provide was the model and serial number.
