When you say "passed chkdsk," did you use the switches I posted? You really need to run one chkdsk /x /f /r

In addition to a faulty hard drive, this could also be virii/malware related from what you're describing. If you've backed up your important data, I would consider reformatting/reinstalling Windows.

Ive done a chkdsk /c /f now im doing the chkdsk /c /r /f. It SAID it fixed a few errors the first time so after I did a normal chkdsk /c and got 3 messages.

correcting errors in the master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute

Correcting errors in the volume Bitmap

Windows found problems with the file system

Its the last 1 that im really wondering about. Does this mean XP's corrupted, the HD failing or somthing else?

It looks as though the part of the disk that holds the MBR is corrupted. You should be able to get around it, especially since windows has fixed some of the errors, but to be 100% safe it would be best to RMA the disk.

Oh and that last part is just there to let you know that it did find errors, the message itself is not an error

It says its fixed them but it hasnt. Still no internet access and I still cant turn it off normally. only the button works. sure I could RMA the disk but I need to prove its falty first. Also I got the errors after I ran the chkdsk with the /f so I must of missed it or they corrupted again

if its in the boot sector, you can run "fixboot" or "fixmbr" at the command prompt

Allright, I'm convinced the disk is fine. Windows is taking a crap, and it may be best to just nuke it. For internet, make sure everything is connected and try typing this in a command prompt.

Code:
ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew
Not sure about the windows XP shutdown problem. I know win98 had an issue where at some random point in time it would just quit shutting down. You could do a maintenance sweep, clean off viruses and spyware, clean the registry, etc.

There's so many things that can cause a failed shut-down, it isn't funny. Typically, a new driver will cause this. Often enough, a virus will as well.

For me, I've never been able to "fix" it once that occurs. It's a clean wipe of the HDD and a reinstall to get it shutting down properly.

Have you done any thing to your RAM recently? Has it passed memtest? Have you tightened timings or overclocked your ram recently? Just making sure as bad O/C'ing or aggressive timings often causes MBR corruption.
