I dunno what happened but I got very lucky and got onto windows. (pure chance). I got 2 messages from it aswell

first
'one of the files containing data on the system regrastery (excuse spelling) had to be repared from a log or alutunate (sorry) copy. Recovery was sucessful.'
was something along those lines
second was just about fixing windows messenger

more probs,as always, now things just stop responding. Speedfans stuck open, macafee just wont open and asks me to send the report. WHATS GOING ON!!!!

mkay. Sounds like your disk is still going out on you and I would recover the important data, nuke it and return it.

As mentioned, be sure and back up any important files ASAP. With regards to troubleshooting before declaring the drive defective:

- SATA cables are notorious for coming loose. Verify that it's plugged in securely to both the hard drive and motherboard, and double check the power supply's cable to the hard drive too.

- Navigate to the START menu, select RUN, and type CMD. This brings up a command prompt. From here, type chkdsk /x /r /f and then reboot your PC. Fire up your XBox and keep yourself busy while your PC checks your hard disk for errors and attempts to fix them.

Ok and me but not turning off seems to point to the motherboard of currupted XP. If the HD passes chkdsk, how do I prove its gone falty? This is annoying me now

Look on the seagate/maxtor website, they should have the steps they require to determine that the HD is faulty. It really sounds more like a Hardware Error to me then a hosed XP install. You can reinstall XP and see if that fixes it, that will at least eliminate it from the list of causes.
