Of course, thanks to Capper for digging out that SP-94... :). And AS5... haha.

Probably a motherboard problem. Get a new one and report back.

:werd:. I'll swap out the memory from this system when I'm not lazy and then pop it in there. See if we have the same problem.

Well, turns out it was a memory problem. Sure enough, one of the sticks is dead. I swapped out a gig (I have four 512MB sticks) into the PC and it worked.

However, it's not problem-free. It freezes after a few minutes of use. But I'm coming the think it's the MX Revolution we're using. It would freeze up when using the MX Revolution, but right now, I've got a Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse in use (BTW, I'm typing from the new computer) and it hasn't froze just yet.

Could it really be a freakin' mouse? Bad drivers?

I doubt it's your mouse drivers, although it is a possibility. I still think you should get proper PCI slot screws and make sure the card sits nestled into the slot properly. The screws are the same ones you use to hold your power supply in place, or to screw in your side panels for example. A few others will work too, but there are the best and recommended ones.

The screw problem (video card seating) is resolved, because it wasn't the problem.

Now I just gotta weed out the freeze-up problem.... and the CPU is clocking at 1.6GHz instead of 3.06GHz.... .

Any suggestions? I may just reformat.

a Pentium D 820 should be running at 2.8GHz not 3.06GHz. Set it back to the original clock speed and see what happens.

It also might be vista itself. How long have you had the PC and how long has it been since you installed Vista to when the problem started?

Damnit, I should post the specs. It's a different computer.

-Pentium 4 3.06GHz w/ HT - 533MHz FSB
-Biostar P4M900M4 mobo
-1GB Corsair VS DDR2-533 (right now instead of the failed 2GB Kingston KVR DDR2-667).
-nVidia 6800 (from the Dell)
-200GB Seagate 7200.9RPM PATA drive
-ASUS 18X DVD-RW burner

:). I installed Vista this morning.

I know you said that the temps were safe, but are you sure that the temp monitoring system you have is good? The CPU might be throttling down to a lower clock speed because it's overheating.

It maybe a mouse issue. I know I had a keyboard issue where the comp would freeze and require a restart. I got a USB keyboard (the old one was a PS2) and problem solved!!

Well, sure enough, I'm using a PS/2 keyboard. :). I only have one USB keyboard though, so I'll diagnose with that bugger.
