hmm. Its true, the sonata one case is crap, but he has an external sensor//fan controller, and the temps have always been alright.

Now that you guys mentioned drivers. I'll try the graphics drivers from the green company.

Could you give a little more information on when it lags? Is it always happening in the same spot?
Sounds to me like there are programs fighting for resources. Run SpyBot S&D, AdAware, and a virus scan. Also do the usual check in the msconfig -> startup tab to see if there is anything unneeded in there.

If all else fails, I'd be willing to bet money that a reformat/reinstall will solve the problem (if you find that the drivers are fine).

EDIT:
Oh, and justin, I think it would behove you to be a little more modest and helpful to others concerning computer hardware and technology instead of laughing in their face. Despite the fact that Conroe has just been released, the Pentium-D 9xx series processors really are the latest and greatest readily available from Intel. Conroe currently seems to be having trouble getting out the door and into the retail spotlight...

I want to make sure that, while we are looking at drivers, spyware, etc. - that we are also seriously looking at the thermal issues...

I spent the day driving yesterday to go work on a friend's machine. He'd had it checked out by multiple techs, had done a clean installation, checked drivers, new PSU etc...

In the end? It was an overheating video card that caused the lagging. Once I fixed his rats nest and re-ran fans in the case for better airflow the problem instantly went away...

Just a thought.

as blake said first check the msconfig sturtup section for unneeded programs running (I would assume there are since you said that you don't know much about computers and most of the programs install themselves in the startup by default). you only need the firewall, antivirus and if you use it then messenger or yahoomessenger or AIM. everything else can be removed. next check in the bios if your CPU (processor) doesn't overheat. when starting up the rig, usually by pressing the delete button (sometimes F1 depending on MB) you get in to the motherboards bios. there should be a section which shows the fan speeds and temperatures of both the CPU (processor) and NB (north bridge). intel CPU's will considerably slow down to avoid damage when overheating. if this is the case then you have to improve airflow (it should be done anyway) by installing extra fans (NB-if it doesn't have any, front of the case-sucking in the air and back of the case sucking out the hot air). the last thing would be to scan your computer with antivirus, and anti spyware apps to see if viruses, trojans and/or spyware could be the cause of lagging. if you aren't sure about the steps what to do, just let us know and someone will help you

Not completely. You probably don't want to remove any startup code for video drivers and such...

No use for Nvidia stuff, it's all safe to remove. Those things are only useful for the contextual menu and to be sure it's correctly "installed". You can remove them and it won't break anything or give you problems.
As for ATI, I never keep atismart since it breaks my overclock. VPU recover is useful though, so it's up to you.

I too am thinking that it might be a driver problem. Reinstall your graphics, and motherboard (chipset, etc.) drivers. Regardless of its version number, your problems could have been the result of a bad install.

Tuathal mentioned heat as being a possible reason for your problem. Open the side panel to your case and run it in an open environment where your components can get some air. I've seen your desk and the case is confined in a small crevice. I remember the nforce2 southbridge would become very hot and sometimes sound would lag.

its a combination of sound and videolag. The case has quite a bit of airflow now, and its not like its a x1900xt. The 7900gt runs ll stock, along with everything else. I've never checked the south bridge though. Mabye if there isn't anything there, i'll plop on a HS.
