| Not much time to reread... did you flash the bios? did you do a chat with HP to see if you needed to do anything before running XP sp2 (if you have it installed?) | I was just reading elsewhere and found this advice: Device Manager Opened have her go to View and click on Show Hidden Devices to see if she has a RootKit installed... Some of the online role playing games install them and they show up in Device Manager... Some Sony CD's do too but I'm not sure if they show up there or not.... The only reason I mention it is because I remember reading, somewhere, that some RootKits where put in programs to keep people from making copies of commercial software and some of those RootKits disabled CD drives... It doesn't matter if you tried to make copies or not, the RootKits just interfere with some CD drivers... This isn't something I'm familiar with, but I wonder if it's the problem, it would make sense. | Bro, there's a difference between a driver and a drive. - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 |

| Super Moderator | More of an FYI than solution - sorry... When a drive will read DVD's but not CD's, its often a hardware issue. CDs actually rotate at much higher RPMs. If the motor is weak in the drive or if the hub is a bit loose, the drive may read and write DVDs just fine while failing on CD's. That said - it can still be a driver or firmware issue. It could even be a software issue. Its worth checking - like the others have said and you are trying. As Blondie pointed out, there are of pieces of DRM ware that have been known to disable optical drives. They are typically associated with Games. Proof to this rare - so I suspect that the actual issue is rare as well (Sony aside). I do have a DVD drive that doesn't like certain CDs. Specifically, it will not read or write Imation CD-RW's. I have no idea why. I suspect that when the issue is limited to a particular brand - its a firmware/driver issue. If you do end up getting a new drive, you might need to consider an external. Or, you might see if USB thumb drives will siute your needs (very portable). Good luck, I'd give you more advice, but you are already getting great advice. Manta |
