Will it play recognise an audio CD?

After flashing the firmware try un-installing the drive (in the Windows device manager) and then restarting the computer.

Make sure the controller is in DMA mode, not PIO mode.

Try using a cleaning disc in it.

I think he's tried that, he says it won't read any CD's, not even a blank one. This was pretty much what happened with our's, nothing on any type of CD, would only see DVD's.

Cooper, I've never done firmware. I would recheck to make sure that you got the right one and that your download didn't get corrupt.

I did see that it wouldn't read any cd's, sorry for asking that stupid question again:doh:

I would think that it is just a bad drive. At todays prices, you can get a DVD rw pretty cheap!

Here is a link to a lite-on DVD burner with lightscribe for 32.99 at newegg

if it wont read or write CDs but does DVDs then it is time to replace the drive.
Apparently you have tried multiple CD burning programs, updating the firmware, testing the drive in another PC...
none of that works, sounds like time to buy a new one. Stinger has a VERY good buy there

Thanks HL and Corsair!

In my case it was a fairly new drive, purchased at the same time as hubby's build - which was last Nov. - Dec. I guess i should try to find his drive, not sure if I ever tested it in another system, too much stuff went on back then
