Indexing in my opinion is close to useless. It indexes your files for a faster search. Personally, I don't run a search everyday and even if I did, the few more seconds it takes is pretty much nothing. The easiest way to disable indexing is to disable the indexing service, which disables indexing on all drives. You can do that by right clicking "Computer" (whether it's in your Start menu or on your desktop) then Manage. Expand the Services and Applications section in the left side of the window, then highlight Services.
Find Windows Search, right click it and go to properties. Put the Startup type to disable and click ok. The service will disabled unless you re-enable it. Don't be scared, it doesn't disable the whole search function under Windows. :P

While you're in the service, you can always disable Readyboost. It's a somewhat pointless feature of Vista, touted as useful for people not having much RAM. It uses a USB key, that you configure for that when plugging it in, to use as paging. With the amount of RAM you have, you don't need that, neither do you need to be prompted everytime you insert a USB key.

I'll write on shadow copy after dinner, gtg.

based on this info and other posts, it sounds like you have a virus or trojan hiding in your system that has not been completely removed...
Go get a program called superantispyware, then once installed boot into safe mode and run a full system scan.
let us know what it finds and removes...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

This is what I get WTF this aint no commodore!

actually I got 2 trojans and 5 tracking cookies. The tracking cookies seem to keep coming back, and from what I can gather on them, they could be from software vendors from M$ and they cant be removed for good I quarentined and removed them.I'm going to boot safe againg and run the program again and see what happens.
The HDD has calmed down quite a bit...looks normal now, with a blue light flash ,about every 5 to 15 or so seconds.

the trojans are your problem... when they first get installed, they try installing a few small harmless files to see if there is security software that tries to stop them... if not then they start running the hardware hard causing it to slow down and fill up the hard drive slowly until you have no room left... accessing porn sites and wherever else it can to fill more junk and other trojans onto your computer

Have you checked what was using the hard drive by doing the procedure I described? This could hint us if it's not a Windows process.

Disabling ShadowCopy is "dangerous". It won't harm your computer to disable it, but in case you mess up you won't be able to come back to an earlier time. ShadowCopy takes RAM and HD space to archive modified files.
You can go here to learn the safest way to disable ShadowCopy, if you still want.

You might want to run a scan with both those utilities
http://www.safer-networking.org
http://www.ccleaner.com/

First to remove any spyware that might be there, second to clean all the junk files, cookies and such.

Edit: Take a screenshot of the Disk section, ordered by read or write (or one of both!) so we know which process seems to access your drive all the time.

The disk section in the performance and reliability section. Order the list by clicking on the "Read" column header.
Click the image to open in full size.
Take a screenshot of this section by pressing Print Screen key and then pasting in Paint or another image editing application, then save as JPEG and attach with your next post.
Do the same with Write column.

Trojan.Popuper hijacks the default Internet Explorer settings and changes your Internet Explorer homepage. It also appears as a security alert notifying users that their PC has been compromised and then downloads rogue antispyware products onto their PC.
Remove all spyware or antivirus programs from your system except the basics and trusted programs: Mcafee, AVG, Avira, Spyware Terminator, superantispyware... anything else other than whats been mentioned in this thread... remove it.
I bet one of those spyware related programs on your system like PCdoctor or other types is the trojan itself.
