You really have to build a completely clean box and install rubber gloves to the box and do it that way, and then there sure is no way to know if it will work or not
Yea... I rather spend my time building a light box than an anti-dust box... Not to mention we dont have any rubber gloves...

Man this drive must be freezing cold! Its been spinning and stuff for like 10 minutes now and still ice cold! I guess sticking your system in the freezer will provide good temperatures :)

Hmmmm, btw... Does anyone know what screwdriver should be used to remove the screws? They seem like the fancy torx one I think.. But I dont have one small enough.

Yea, its a seagate.. I think they are #6... I will just buy a small set for like $10 at a local (2miles away) hardware store. Who knows what else they might be useful for.

I would just take the logic board off the bottom of an identical drive, and swap them, rather trying to move the platters from one drive to another.

Yup That is what I am planning to do. I am not going to waste time moving the platter as I know I will get dust on it and make it worse....

I read a few articles of drives that weren't detected by windows and when the author swapped the control board for a different one (from a working drive) and windows detected the drive.

Good Luck,
LMFAO, it cracks me up that you would even suggest that. I have never in my entire life, had data that important. Of course I back my stuff up so that's not really an issue. I sure as hell would not replace HD platters for only $200.

Me neither I am actually surprised that if this data is soo important, why didn't they back it up? Oh well.. I should get the second drive in a few days and will let you know how it goes :)

That was a what the heck if you have nothing better to do suggestion. My main suggestion was the control board. The impression I get from some of you guys is that you will try anything once and twice if you get a positive result. If I had a lot of spare time and all the parts, I might try it just to see if I could do it. How many people can say they field stripped a HD and got it to work?

Alright, well...

I got another identical drive and I swapped the control boards. I plugged the hard drive w/ new board into my USB enclosure and 30seconds after it started up there was a clicking noise every 3 seconds.

I would guess that is bad? And that the drive might be dead? How hard is it to move the platter? As I seem to understand thats the only option left.

Sounds like you got the Click of Death, pretty much means the drive is shot. Hopefully the control board didn't go as well, as that would give you two dead drives

...
Remember those little vacuum sealed areas in biohazard labs and stuff, where they have thick rubber gloves sticking through the glass and have to work that way? Thats pretty much what you need to be sure no dust and prints get on the platters, AND then you'd be trying to move them from one drive to another using the gloves and praying you don't drop them.
No way in hell I'd go that far for 200 bucks, man. You gave it a great shot, going farther then most with the control board but I'd give up now on the drive.
