lol, my father reduces most movies from 4-7gb, down to a whopping 700 mb, just so that he can fit it onto a CD, which are a bit cheaper than dvds, and you can have way more movies saved on a hdd, like mine used to have 170 or so

the problem with that is that you lose a good portion of the quality, especially for those of us that watch them still... for archival purposes that is fine, I have done that myself to a few...

We call that Ripping a DVD. I have been doing that for several years.

If you don't mind paying a little, AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 are an awesome combo.

I can rip, transcode, and burn a typical DVD in 15mins using a speed hacked Lite-On SOHD-16P9S for ripping, an i830D @ 3.3ghz for transcoding, and a Plextor PX-716A for writing.
