I don't see a 8 pin connector anywhere on the mobo and the 4 pin is 4 pins in a square shape and that is plugged in.

Was worth a shot, I still think its PSU related.

Could be but the only other PSU is in this computer and it's a 480 watt generic.

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

Did you try unplugging the molex connector from the motherboard? Seems like I recall reading an Asus motherboard having problems running a single videocard with that supplemental power plugged in. Barring an actual hardware problem, your ECS may be finicky as well. Worth a shot anyway...

I tried it first without the plug and then with it and no go either way.

The PSU is about 2 years old so it's not new.

im not entirely sure, but I believe the PCI-E power is provided by the extra 4 pins, and when using two cards, the power for the other slow is provided by the molex, so it is very possible your video card isnt getting any power at all..

Are you sure you dont have any extra junky working PCI video cards lying arround some where?

no, the actual definition of that extra 4-pin molx is that it provides "more stable power" while powering two cards in SLI.
If its an old generic PSU, then it could have a bad rail.....did it work fine before?
