Reinstall Roxio or better yet download different burning software and try that .I had problems with Roxio before and switched to nero. Try snapfiles for free burning software.

If you put a disk in the drive can you open it up in My Computer and browse the contents of the CD?

I am thinking the drive is burnt toast. Optical drives have become very cheap over the years, in both price and quality. I have had very few optical drives last more then 2 years. I have a stack of 4 that are deader then door nails, of various brands and types. My suggestion, have her spend $50-$75 on a new drive and move on with her life and yours.
