Have you tried on your system yet?? You stated that you were going to take it home and give it a try.

it does it in games which means 3D. normally your card is in 2D, when gaming in 3D it starts working hard and therefore heats up. I suspect this is overheating. check temperatures. is there good airflow in the case? is the thermal paste under the cooler dried out or not present? is the cooler making a good connection on the GPU and mem? is the card OC'd too far?

Looks an awful lot like a card dying on you. Often enough it's a bad memory IC on the card doing those kind of artifacts, an overheating or damaged from overheat GPU. Try uninstalling the drivers completely just to make sure then installing the latest official drivers, and testing again. If you still see the artifacts, uninstall and try latest beta drivers.
If it's still does that, then yeah I would probably consider that a defective card.

Initiate an RMA with your videocard's manufacturer.

okay, thanks guys... I did uninstall and reinstall the newest drivers and also beta drivers and nothing changed. thanks for all the help. I am going to lend my dad one of my 8800 gtx's to keep him running while he figures out what he's gonna do. the computer was built at a local computer store, so I think he is going to call them on Monday and find out what the options are. I know he didnt regester the card, and he thinks the computer store did it for him.

hopefully they will take care of him......

thanks again...

sounds like the memory on his 8800GTS is going bad. is it an overclocked version of the 8800GTS? if so its worth a shot in lowering the memory speed to the stock speed of 1600mhz. still RMA it, but it may work long enough to give your dad some time to decide what to do

I don't think the computer store did it for him, at least I know were I used to work we would usually give a 1 year in store warranty for video cards and the rest was up to the client.

Hi guys...

Firstly just wanted to say thanks for helping me or "us" figure out which direction to take and the possible casuses of the crap that was on the screen. Apparently my dad walked into the computer store and struck a deal with them and ended up walking out of the store with a MSI Geforce 8800 GT 512Mb card with some fancy heatsink on it. I didnt ask too many questions, but i installed it, updated the drivers and she seemed pretty good.

but as u all said the card was bad.

thanks
