between the 2 values the 3dmark score went up by 100 points... just by changing that value..... still testing though...... trying to at least...

Besides cosmetics, the main purpose of the covers are to direct the airflow from the fans to the heatsinks. Now, the air is blowing in all directions, and very little is getting to the heatsinks.

In my experience, ambient room air temp makes more difference in your case than you'd think it should, especially if you have good case ventilation.

"1T" and "2T" is the CMD or Command Rate of your memory. It is the time it takes between the memory chip having been activated and when the first command may be sent to the memory. 1T = one clock cycle, 2T= two clock cycles. On most DD RAM it isn't specified. CMD isn't really a "timing", but works as such...going from 2T to 1T is like "tightening the timing", and vice-versa. When overclocking, taking your RAM from 1T to 2T can often be the ticket to that better overclock.

Though your memory wasn't designed to run at 1T, it did fine...until that particular game really put it to the test. That could very well be what caused the problem.

When you start screwing around with your BIOS....overclocking, changing memory timings, etc, it is good to make notes, and keep them somewhere...especially when you get old...LOL...when you have a problem, check your notes. Very possible that the last things you did could be the problem.

I ran a quick test today..... I went back and changed the memory to 2T and ran 3dmark..... temps sat around 60, and 3dmark ran fine...... then I went back and changed mem to 1T and reran 3dmark.... guess what.... it locked up 1/2way through... rebooted, reset mem to 2T and 3dmark ran again to the end.... quick note... when 3dmark locked up, the puter just froze, there was no BSOD, just a lock up..

also.... I have an Antic 900 case with all the fans maxed out... I also have the side fan aswell.... to me there is alot of AIR FLOW through the case, aswell as a air purifier/cleaner which blows pretty cool air, and I direct this at the computer on a 45 degree angle so 1/2 goes through the front and 1/2 goes through the side of the case. To me..... with the covers off, I would tend to think it would push all the hot air more easly away from the gpu's... I mean... please im no expert and what you said about the fan pushing the air away does make perfect sence since its trapped inside the cover and only has 1 way or direction to go, but also to me it would almost seem to trap the hot air aswelll, but now, it is free to move away off the gpu's...... I'll put the covers back on, probably the safest smartest thing to do... I mean, its only 3 small shrinky-dinky screws :).....

thankyou guys for all the help and input. I didn't expect this kind of responce to all my questions and posts I have already put under my belt... seems there is always somene here willing to toss there 2cents in and help... so hopefully problem solved... hopefully.....

Think of a heatsink like a car radiator...it works much better when air is forced through it by the fan. Much more air passes through it when a fan is blowing directly on it, so much more heat gets transferred from the heatsink to the air.

I will admit this though... withthe covers off, both cards are increasing together... I mean both cards have the same temps at the same time. before the top card would get really hot first then the second would eventually catch up.... not its more stable temps between the 2 cards.. strange...

since you got the culprits being your last timings of the RAM, fixed up the timings...
then, since you took the cover off, why not buy two VGA coolers', there is tons of them to choose from...
for you to create a room between the PSU and VC[video card], i would suggest the one made by thermalright, i think??? i forgot the model name... then put a 120 fan directly to both VC that should lower your GPU temps...

Yeah, I agree. I have yet to see a stock GPU cooler that was worth a crap...excepting the few cards that have come stock with the Arctic Cooling NV or ATI series, and seems like one of the Fatal1ty cards came with the Zalman Fatal1ty FS-V7 GPU cooler. (which is an awesome cooler, I reviewed one, and also the Zalman VF-700Cu, which the Fatal1ty cooler is based on...both coolers lowered my GPU temps at least 15C)

My last few video cards got new Zalman coolers before being installed.

Not sure if that design will work with two cards in SLI though. They only take one PCI space, so don't see why they wouldn't. But there are lots of other good GPU coolers.

I got a Zalman VF900 for my 8600GT, and it idles at 35C. For those 8800GTX's, though, I think I heard that that Thermalright cooler made for the 8800GTX it the best.... Thermalright HR-03 Plus VGA Cooler Review

what would be the thickness of the thing installed?? Also, are there any photos out there with this installed, ecspecially in SLI??

Okay... I read the review, and see its 3 slots tall.... without a fan.....but I do like the wrap around installation.... I think that might work....
