SO...last night i take out a stick of ram...to boot and find that i can now play all my games without my system hanging up...it looks like a dodgy module. which would be CM2X1024-6400C4 ... i thought these things had a lifetime warranty?

Try the same memory in different slots. If it does the same with the stick in another slot, contact the manufacturer and see if they will replace it.... if you get a new stick and it happens again, then it is likely the memory slot or windows itself

STOP 0x1E in Win32k.sys Error May Occur in Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional

Article ID:816047Last Review:October 26, 2006Revision:3.4

SYMPTOMS
When you run Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, you may receive the following error message: STOP 0x0000001E (c00000005, 000000000, 000000000, 000000000)
Note The last three sets of numbers in the error message may vary.

CAUSE
This problem occurs if the Win32k.sys Windows file conflicts with a device driver that is installed on your computer.

This should explain the issue.

When you try and open your games, your driver will try change your screen resolution as requested by the game, this will in turn, be the trigger causing the win32k.sys error.
Best solution i can offer is upgrade or downgrade your driver. Upgrades can often be done through Windows Update but you may prefer to do it straight from the Manufacturers website.

That's all i can help with at the current moment, hope it's useful,
Rio.

Very useful information screwball.
:P

In addition to my post before, having different operating systems can sometimes change this.
Also, you could copy the original file from your install CD manually to the location of the old one. The old one should be located in DRIVE -> WINDOWS -> System32.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT delete the old one, instead re-name it to maybe 'win32k.old'.

Anyone experiencing this issue, can you please reply to this thread with any further details you can add. (E.g. Graphics card, driver version, OS etc.)

Hope this helps,
Rio

Clau_Boss, your error could have a number of causes. These include a hard drive issue. Not knowing your system specifications make it difficult for anyone here to afford good advice. From a purely generic start point I would check your Hard Drive(s) cables and connections. Additionally if your drives are PATA make sure they are set up correctly as a Master / Slave meaning if you have an optical drive on the same controller make sure it is a slave drive.

I would also check your Event Viewer logs. Right click My Computer and choose Manage. In the left pane choose and expand System Tools and then expand the Event Viewer. Now hilight (by clicking on System and then Application) and look for red X items. Double click on those to get more information.

I suggest you start a new thread with this problem as the thread you entered is quite old. Starting a new thread and providing detailed system specifications will get you much better help.

Welcome to the HL Forums.

Ron
