I ended up selling that rig for like $500. You should have got ocz gold instead of the value select stuff.

We tried like 3 or 4 video cards in this computer and one worked half the time, one didnt work at all, and the new 7300 didnt seem to work at all. I am convinced that the problem is the mobo.

Sounds like the MoBo to me. If it was me I would return it for a MoBo that has a chipset that is known to work with Linux.

nForce 4 ;) Dang that stinks. You're right, too. I'd like to know why it won't work though. It worked fine for a day and then just konked out. Rich sent me that mobo for free, so I'm disappointed that it konked out after he took the trouble to send it to me. I'll see if I can whip up a different board though :(

BTW, I checked the coolers and they were all seated just fine. But after I did, it occurred to me that it couldn't have been a thermal problem because it doesn't even send anything out to the monitor most of the time, despite the fact that it runs and starts the OS.

I also laid it all out across my counter to see if it was a grounding problem, and it did the same thing. I also checked for thermal grease on the board, but it was as clean as a whistle. It's so strange!

Perhaps UPS used it as a hockey puck before delivering it to you....

Its not the mobo, that board is brand new, and was only used to write the review, then put right back into the box

Service was down in my area last night, I didn't get a chance to post.

Your power supply is a cheap, generic one, with dual 12V rails. And to my understanding, rail 1 is dedicated solely to the CPU, and second rail is dedicated to everything else located on the motherboard (including the video card and other PCI cards and RAM).

400W MAY be enough to power your system, but the fact that it's a cheap one with a >70% efficiency and a 12V2@16A rail makes me believe that this is a power supply related issue. See if you can get yourself a different PSU to test out.

If you do get it booted, go into the CP and enable the blue screens (disable restarting). That will at least give you a blue screen if something is bad. Did you try booting in safe mode?

Also, can you post some of the blue screen messages you got?

Looking at the PSU link, my 1st thought would be to switch it out; reviews aren't the greatest.

I'd also recheck everything. Are you sure something isn't shorting out or that you have the HSF on correctly?

Another question I have is, the HD is it an IDE or sata?

It is SATA. I am still convinced that it is the mobo. We tried 3 video cards. 1 pci express and 2 pci and none seemed to work properly, but at least one of them works perfectly in one of the other computers at his house. That same card only worked about 30% of the times that we tried it.
Josh, try takin the psu out of your parents computer and stickin in yours and see what happens... Just a thought.

That's what I'm afraid of, though I don't see how. And what's really strange about it is that it worked perfectly for one day. I don't understand what could have gone wrong because it didn't fail until I just walked into my room the next night and it was locked up.

I highly doubt that since it did the same thing with almost no hardware running, but I'll give it a try.

The problem isn't with the OS, I can say that much at least. The problem happens most before it ever touches the hard drive.

If I get another, I'll post it.

Well at least that'd be cheaper than a motherboard, anyways. I sure do hope it's not the mobo, though I was nervous about the fact I got a couple drops of thermal grease on it. I cleaned it up, but there's that slim chance that I missed a spot. I couldn't find any spots though, and that doesn't make sense because the system worked fine the first day.

I tested the system on my counter without the case. Nothing macroscopic was shorted.
