try a few different USB items in the ports, if it recognizes all of them, try the next port.. if only one item is not working properly in multiple ports then it is that item. If multiple items are not working in one port then it is that USB port.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

If you want to pursue this you may want to lookie here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

When you boot something is still looking for your offending program that was removed. I would start there. Run REGEDIT from Start / Run and navigate to the Run keys in your registry.

Another option is to download and run Hijack This and see what is going on. HJT is a pretty good all around tool.

I just called HP she told me since it's such a general error the only thing to do is a system recovery

And I am sure she is highly trained tech support. Yes, it is a very general error, however, you already know what might be the cause. Sorry but my fondness for OEM technical support is lacking.

I don't agree it's the "only" thing to do but it is the quickest and easy plus gets the customer off the phone.

True I totally agree but if it's a hardware problem I doubt it would fix it. Shit things are getting worse I am trying to save my c drive to my secondary drive on my laptop and I got this error Windows-Delayed Write Failed

could the second drive being the problem?

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true: •The "Enable write caching on the disk" feature for your disk is turned on.•Your Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) hard disk controller is configured in either of the following ways: •You are using a 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable. •The BIOS settings are configured to force faster UDMA modes.

Again a few possible causes. To insure a good save before things really go South I would look this over:

Error message that you may receive when you save or move documents in Windows XP: "Delayed Write Failed"

Right now I have that second drive (the one that I tried to save the c drive to) in an enclosure and so far so good I will leave it on all night and see what happened. I have the feeling that all that was caused by my secondary drive. How could I check that the secondary drive is in good shape?

Run a manufacturer's utility on it would be first guess. Sometimes even a good drive runs lousy in an external controller dur to various issues like the controller.

Actually it's the opposite I think taht drive was causing me problems in my laptop now it's in a case and it's working fine. But too early to see, I will leave the laptop on all night and see if I get the same blue screen in the morning.
