sorry storm,
Unfortunately it was.
I have 5 of them here the only one that showed any promise was is the Asus Crosshair.
but my 5000+ was killed by a bad DFI 590SLI board so I have not been able to test it out properly yet.

Kinda like Intel knocking out the 975 and then the 965. The 590 was a holdover for the 680i series. IMHO, all four of those chipsets could have been a lot better than they were/are. Me, I'm really looking forward to the X38's coming down in price. I think this will be my next chipset.

What chipsets have support for the Penryn line, both dual and quads. Is it just X38 and X48, or P35 and others as well?

the ones that I know of for sure are the P35 (with a BIOS flash) the X38 and the X48 (which will be out in early january)

Is it a persistent problem even when disabled? That is, of course, one of the first things I turn off when setting up a BIOS for the first time.

From what little I've read, the complaint making the rounds is that EIST stays enabled even after disabling it in the BIOS. I'm currently testing the Gigabyte DA-X38-DQ6 for an upcoming review (next week), and so far, I' haven't seen same bug, either on the original BIOS it shipped with (F4) or the latest one I just installed (F6b).
