| I live really close to DLI (Defense Language Institute) in Monterey (both my mom and dad both work there) and many veterans have their families in that area. Maybe I can ask around... | reference this... I do have some very old PCs (around 10 of them). They are left overs from work. When I say old, I mean anywhere from about 250mhz to 750mhz range. Most are missing RAM, but I also know I have some extra pc133 around. Some are missing hard drives too, but I think more than half have HDDs (but all we would need is some old IDE drives). I know they are old but they will still run WIN98 (Word/email/internet) just fine. Let me know... it's about time for me to unload these somehow, because I will never use them... | ||||||||||||||

| Rich, I'm all for this. I'll be one of your system assemblers if you need me. Have we got a contact at Microsoft to see if they would provide software for these? An excellent organization to contact for liaison between wounded warriors and this site would be Soldier's Angels. When we had the tornado, they sent us money. Wounded Soldiers who arrive here on Fort Rucker are given all kinds of financial and transition support from these guys. Soldier's Angels are a very squared away bunch of people that are dedicated like you wouldn't believe to taking care of our disabled Vets and their families. | I am close to Eglin AFB, FL which I hear is the base most chosen to retire near... not sure how true but if traffic is any indication, theres more old people per capita here than any other place I have seen.... as for the recent arrivals back home from wartime, well yeah theres plenty of them as well. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Great idea Capper!!!! I have a brother in the local VFW, where he lives. And I'd be happy to donate the time and labor to build some of these systems. I live in the St. Louis, Mo. area, so I could take care of most of the midwest. BUt I think you'll have all that figured out before you start the hammers. | The Final Word
| Remember, these people we deal with at companies are people too.....most of them are very very nice in fact......I've made a lot of friends in this business (while always remaining professional). Let me be the point of contact for handing these out, I don't mind people asking for input, but if too many people are asking around about who needs a computer etc, then people might develop expectations. But, in another sense, we have the full country covered with all of you guys......so hopefully I can get these assembled, and sent out to some of you to distribute. Right now it looks like we are in the 5-10 computer range, and the parts that we'll need to scrounge are the types I figured on, HDD, optical drives, monitors, and power supplies. Once we have stuff coming in, and an idea of who is getting involved, I'll have a better idea of where this is going. We have emailed MS, but even if they don't want to get involved or anything, we can use Ubuntu or the like, which will probably play nicer with an older system anyway.
