I have always had good luck with both gnome and KDE on any system I add it to regardless of the video card... even in basic VGA mode with some older ATi based cards, it still ran good

Perhaps you missed the nVidia driver?
Thats what I used, I just think it's an inferior distro. Suse, Mandriva, and Fedora Core are all easier to use, install, and come with better software packages then Ubuntu. Ubuntu is like driving a Honda Civic after Driving a BMW when trying to go from the other distros.

Maybe you guys just try other distros and stop pimping your Linux Candy Store. There is better out there you just have to look for it.

I currently use Fedora Core 8 x64 and even got hardware acceleration working with my ATI X1950GT... I have used all sorts of distros and found Ubuntu to be the most simplistic for a beginner but once you start getting into usage, Fedora has a much better layout for power users

I am using Mandriva this week, it's cute, but I will probably go back to Suse 10.3 once I have completed this weeks tests.

yeah I have a system I am putting together for linux testing... just need a stick or two of DDR and I have everything else (and hope the board itself is not bad)
