First welcome to HardwareLogic!!!

My biggest problem with all of the distro's is installing software!!! Jeez, can't they figure out a damn way to just click on the thing and make it install like the windows exe!!!

Although I found software installation from the Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu problem free and straight forward, some users like Automatix as an easier alternative. (For some reason a lot of forum posters thumb their noses at it. Penguin arrogance?) Home of Automatix

openSUSE, on the other hand, comes with just about any software imaginable. Software.openSUSE.org

Also for those that use KDE, Adept is a very clean and straight forward package manager much like Synaptic.

I'm running ubuntu 7.10 on one of my computer's, it pretty nice. Defiantly nice looking once you get compiz enabled, lol. But... on my tablet pc, ubunut just doesn't work very well... linux handwriting recognition just doesn't exist, and there are few alternatives, and the real deal breaker is that you can't rotate the screen orientation with the ati drivers (nvidia works fine though, go figure).

But ubuntu on my old socket a computer is awsome, old 3200 xp+, 1.5 gigs of ram, and a 7600gs. Oh yeah.

Just curious here, can Linux talk to Windows in a networking environment? I'm thinking of getting a laptop with Linux preinstalled, but I want to be sure it can talk to my current XP machine.

Yes, using Samba

even if samba is not installed or enabled, it is very easy to get it installed and activated on any linux distro... the only ones that may have a slightly different configuration or program needed is SUSE or BSD

Try using the KDE interface.
it absolutely screams with my 7400go on my laptop, and 7900gt on my desktop. It also runs perfectly fine on any of the 2 fx 5500's, 7900gs, 7600gt, or 8800gts at work.
Perhaps you missed the nVidia driver?

Even with the gnome interface ubuntu ran awesome for me, even when I was still using a 6600. You might want to try the latest release of ubuntu, 7.10... very user friendly when it came to installing drivers and whatnot. Easier than windows, even, since it'll find the right driver and install if for you once you tell it to.
