EDIT: Dread, added a little thing about rubbing compounds at the bottom. Oh yeah, Ty, the only reason i would even attempt this is because the E4300 is cheap. I would never do this on a Q6600.

I lapped my X6800 and have 3 degs cooler idle/Loaded running on average measured with TAT

Yeah, I'd be extremely nervous to lap a really expensive CPU like the X6800, but you did an excellent job on it.

One of my magazines has 6000 grit stones used for shining/sharpening knives and chisels. Would be interesting to see what a 6000 grit lap would look like, but I doubt the stones are anywhere near flat enough. Anyways great guide!

Indeed, very nicely done on that X6800, thanks for sharing the pics! I have a hard time trying to work up the nerve to lap a $70 E2140, let alone an X6800!

Blake, go for it! Depending on what temps you are getting, lapping could be very beneficial! (not to mention fun!)

Couple Questions:

1 - Do you moisten the sandpaper at all, since it's wet/dry sandpaper?

2 - If my HSF is very convex, to the point where only the very center of the HSF touches the CPU... would this work for me? Will it remove enough metal?

3 - How long did stage 1 take you (400 grit) ?

Thanks! Great guide!

  1. No, I did it all dry.
  2. Hmm, I'd recommend lapping both the HSF and the CPU in that case.
  3. I wrote this a while ago, and I kinda forget... sorry.
